K9

Work one-on-one with your K9 partner to keep Folsom safe. Your K9 will assist in a variety of ways, from detecting threats to providing additional security, and you will care for your K9 in return, ensuring they are happy and healthy throughout their entire length of service.

Traffic

Help protect Folsom’s roadways by enforcing traffic laws, assessing potential threats and intervening where necessary, assisting disabled motorists and more.

Special Weapons and Tactics

The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team is there to handle high-risk operations. As a part of S.W.A.T., you may be called upon to assist with hostage rescues, critical search and arrest warrants, incidents involving active shooters and more.

Special Investigations Unit

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) consists of three detectives and a sergeant, specializing in addressing narcotics, sales/transportation, gang/parole/probation en­forcement, and fugitive apprehension.

Criminal Investigations Unit

General Investigations is comprised of one sergeant and five detectives. Two detectives specialize in crimes against persons to include felony assaults, domestic violence, and sex assaults.

Problem-Oriented Policing

Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) is a proactive approach to crime prevention. Rather than focusing on individual crimes, POP looks at factors that increase the frequency of certain types of crimes. In diagnosing those factors, we can then identify ways in which those crimes can be prevented before they happen.

School Resource Officer

School Resource Officers (SROs) focus entirely on the safety and security of all 17 school campuses within Folsom. As an SRO, you will handle threats to campus safety, on-campus conflict and overall, the wellbeing of the student body.

Homeless Outreach Team

The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) works directly with homeless individuals around Folsom, providing support, resources and assistance where possible, rather than only focusing on strict enforcement and displacement.

Honor Guard

The Folsom Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit meant to act as ambassadors to the community. As a member of honor guard, you will maintain exceptionally high standards of both appearance and conduct, re-enforcing trust within our community.

Mounted Patrol officers and their horses serve as both effective crime deterrent and community ambassadors. Because you will be patrolling on horseback, you have a unique vantage point that will help you maintain a safe environment in crowded areas or during city events.

Instructor

One of the most important things in an effective police department is firearm safety. As a Firearms/Range Instructor, you will be responsible for educating your fellow officers on firearm safety, accuracy and use cases.

Crime Scene Investigation

The Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team is comprised of sworn and professional staff from throughout the department. These professionals receive specialized training related to the processing of crime scenes and the collection, analyzing and preserving of evidence from them.

New Hires

In addition to lateral transfers, Folsom PD is always looking for eager, motivated individuals to become officers. We accept applications from entry-level cadets who have completed Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) or are currently in the process of completing their POST Academy training. To become an officer with Folsom PD, you must:

  1. Achieve a passing score on the PELLETB (POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery)
  2. Successfully pass the PAT (Physical Abilities Test)

Dispatch

Protecting our community takes hard work and dedication, and our officers can’t do it alone. Dispatchers are our eyes and ears, interfacing with our community
to determine how Folsom PD can help them best. As a dispatcher, you must maintain a calm demeanor and exercise swift, careful judgement in the face of pressure and panic. We are accepting both entry-level and lateral dispatchers.

The qualifications are as follows:

  • Entry Level – Dispatcher I: Two years of full-time clerical experience involving substantial public contact. Experience in dealing with difficult or distressed individuals is desirable. Must be able to type 45 words per minute (WPM) and provide a typing certification with proof of typing skills with application. The certificate must be dated within the last year.
  • Lateral – Dispatcher II: One year of full-time dispatch experience with a governmental law enforcement agency. Duties routinely performed must be similar to those completed by dispatchers at the Folsom Police Department.
  • Both: Must be willing to work varied, rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Steps to Apply

Applying to become an officer with Folsom PD is a simple process. Lateral transfers can expect less time between submitting an application and reaching their initial interview stage. In general, this process will take 4-6 months for new hires.
